At the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India , it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days.

Fogg and Passepartout reach Suez in time. While disembarking in Egypt, they are watched by a Scotland Yard detective, Detective Fix, who has been dispatched from London in search of a bank robber.

Since Fogg fits the vague description Scotland Yard was given of the robber, Detective Fix mistakes Fogg for the criminal. Since he cannot secure a warrant in time, Fix boards the steamer the Mongolia conveying the travelers to Bombay.

Fix becomes acquainted with Passepartout without revealing his purpose. Fogg promises the steamer engineer a large reward if he gets them to Bombay early.

They dock two days ahead of schedule. After reaching India, they take a train from Bombay to Calcutta. Fogg learns that the Daily Telegraph article was wrong; a mile stretch of track from Kholby to Allahabad has not yet been built.

Fogg purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and starts toward Allahabad. They come across a procession in which a young Indian woman, Aouda , is to undergo sati.

Since she is drugged with opium and hemp and is obviously not going voluntarily, the travelers decide to rescue her.

They follow the procession to the site, where Passepartout takes the place of Aouda's deceased husband on the funeral pyre.

During the ceremony he rises from the pyre, scaring off the priests, and carries Aouda away. The twelve hours gained earlier are lost, but Fogg shows no regret.

The travelers hasten to catch the train at the next railway station, taking Aouda with them. At Calcutta, they board a steamer the Rangoon going to Hong Kong, with a day's stopover in Singapore.

Fix has Fogg and Passepartout arrested. They jump bail and Fix follows them to Hong Kong. He shows himself to Passepartout, who is delighted to again meet his travelling companion from the earlier voyage.

In Hong Kong, it turns out that Aouda's distant relative, in whose care they had been planning to leave her, has moved to Holland , so they decide to take her with them to Europe.

Passepartout becomes convinced that Fix is a spy from the Reform Club. Fix confides in Passepartout, who does not believe a word and remains convinced that his master is not a bank robber.

To prevent Passepartout from informing his master about the premature departure of their next vessel, the Carnatic, Fix gets Passepartout drunk and drugs him in an opium den.

Passepartout still manages to catch the steamer to Yokohama, but neglects to inform Fogg that the steamer is leaving the evening before its scheduled departure date.

Fogg discovers that he missed his connection. He searches for a vessel that will take him to Yokohama , finding a pilot boat, the Tankadere , that takes him and Aouda to Shanghai , where they catch a steamer to Yokohama.

In Yokohama, they search for Passepartout, believing that he may have arrived there on the Carnatic as originally planned.

They find him in a circus, trying to earn the fare for his homeward journey. Reunited, the four board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, taking them across the Pacific to San Francisco.

Fix promises Passepartout that now, having left British soil, he will no longer try to delay Fogg's journey, but instead support him in getting back to Britain so he can arrest Fogg in Britain itself.

In San Francisco they board a transcontinental train to New York, encountering a number of obstacles along the way: a massive herd of bison crossing the tracks, a failing suspension bridge , and the train being attacked by Sioux warriors.

After uncoupling the locomotive from the carriages, Passepartout is kidnapped by the Indians, but Fogg rescues him after American soldiers volunteer to help.

They continue by a wind powered sledge to Omaha , where they get a train to New York. In New York, having missed the ship China, Fogg looks for alternative transport.

He finds a steamboat, the Henrietta, destined for Bordeaux, France. He then bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool.

Against hurricane winds and going on full steam, the boat runs out of fuel after a few days. Fogg buys the boat from the captain and has the crew burn all the wooden parts to keep up the steam.

The companions arrive at Queenstown Cobh , Ireland, take the train to Dublin and then a ferry to Liverpool , still in time to reach London before the deadline.

Once on English soil, Fix produces a warrant and arrests Fogg. A short time later, the misunderstanding is cleared up — the actual robber, an individual named James Strand, had been caught three days earlier in Edinburgh.

However, Fogg has missed the train and arrives in London five minutes late, certain he has lost the wager.

The following day Fogg apologises to Aouda for bringing her with him, since he now has to live in poverty and cannot support her.

Edit page. The Best "Bob's Burgers" Parodies. Clear your history. Phileas Fogg. The border crossing between China and India is only open to traders, and not to tourists.

The route therefore must make a lengthy detour via a third country, or go by air or sea. Freight ships do frequently ply the route taken by Fogg, but there's likely no passenger ship as direct flights to Hong Kong take about four hours.

Land travel is problematic eastwards from India; some areas of easternmost India require special permits on the top of your visa and Myanmar regulates their land borders fairly strictly in all directions.

Going north, you will hardly have any problems getting into Nepal , though crossing into Tibet will require some bureaucracy.

One alternative would be flying to Singapore and traveling from there by land to Hong Kong through Southeast Asia. Budget a week or so for this alternative.

Alternatively, Star Cruises occasionally operates long-haul cruises from Singapore to Hong Kong, typically taking about 10 days. Another possibility would be to fly from India into China and continue by train to Hong Kong or Shanghai.

Perhaps the most interesting route would be to fly from Delhi to Lhasa and continue on routes given in Overland to Tibet , but that risks altitude sickness since Lhasa is at 3, m 12, ft , and the Chinese government has complex and varying regulations for travel permits for Tibet.

A shorter and easier route that avoids both problems would be to fly Kolkata - Kunming called going "over the hump" during World War II; see Burma Road , then continue on routes described in Hong Kong to Kunming overland.

In the novel, Fogg was supposed to catch the Carnatic to Yokohama, but the ship left early, and Passepartout was prevented by Fix from informing Fogg about the change.

While Fogg was unable to find another steamer headed for Yokohama, he manages to hire the Tankadere to take him to Modern cruise ships connect Hong Kong's busy seaport to many destinations, including Tokyo and Okinawa.

A trip to Tokyo takes 12 days with multiple stops in China and South Korea ; Okinawa can be reached in five days with fewer intermediate stops.

You can also take a train from Hong Kong to Shanghai. High speed trains depart daily from Hong Kong and takes 8 hours to reach Shanghai. A cheaper option is to take the slower, sleeper train that departs every 2 days from Hong Kong and arrives in Shanghai in 20 hours.

Again, if you're a bit flexible with the itinerary, it's possible to travel with regular ferries. Continue north from Hong Kong to e.

Shanghai, Suzhou or Qingdao. From there, there are ferries to Japan running every few days. The General Grant makes its scheduled stop in Fogg was reunited with Passepartout in Yokohama, and they board the General Grant together for the trans-Pacific crossing to Crossing the Pacific is probably the hardest problem to solve for anyone who'd like to travel around the world without flying.

Modern cruises run from both Tokyo and Yokohama; one Princess cruise takes a huge circle from Japan north to Alaska then down through Vancouver , San Francisco and Hawaii , arriving in Australia 45 days later.

Modern day cruises usually take about 20 days to complete the journey from Tokyo or Yokohama to San Francisco, almost always stopping in Alaska and Canada on the way.

Freighter travel is probably your best bet here. The Jules Verne itinerary written in makes its North American transcontinental journey entirely through the United States by rail; a railway across Canada would not exist until and a system of United States Numbered Highways which included the once-famous Route 66 would not exist until From there, the train would make its way via Sacramento and Reno to Ogden , from which Fogg and would visit The train then proceeded though the Wasatch Range towards Wyoming.

It was, however, forced to stop near Nevertheless, the engineer made the decision to attempt the crossing at full speed, which allowed the train to barely make it across, with the bridge collapsing immediately after.

The train then proceeded on towards Fort Kearney and Omaha, though it was far from smooth-sailing as they would be attacked by a tribe of Sioux on the way, during which the conductor was incapacitated.

Though the train was stopped at Though the rescue was successful, Fogg would miss the train, and had to make his way to Covering this route by rail exactly as Phileas Fogg did is difficult if not impossible today.

Due to the growing popularity of private car ownership and air travel in the 20th century, rail travel declined; many US rail lines have been dismantled or now only carry heavy freight.

In particular, the main transcontinental line no longer passes through Wyoming which has been left without passenger railroads altogether , instead having been routed further south through Denver , Colorado.

This means that you will have to hitchhike on a freight train for the leg between Salt Lake City and Omaha if you want to replicate the route taken by Fogg.

As the Oakland Bay Bridge had yet to be built, Fogg's carriage may have headed down south to San Jose , and later headed back up north towards Oakland , where he would have caught the train.

Alternatively, Fogg may be boarded a ferry across the bay from San Francisco to Oakland. However, Oakland railway station is no longer served by transcontinental trains with those now serving Emeryville instead.

Because the party had travelled eastward, their days were shortened by four minutes for each of the degrees of longitude they crossed; thus, although they had experienced the same amount of time abroad as people had experienced in London, they had seen 80 sunrises and sunsets while London had seen only Passepartout informs Fogg of his mistake, and Fogg hurries to the Reform Club just in time to meet his deadline and win the wager.

It was during the Franco-Prussian War — in which Verne was conscripted as a coastguard; he was having financial difficulties his previous works were not paid royalties ; his father had died recently; and he had witnessed a public execution, which had disturbed him.

The technological innovations of the 19th century had opened the possibility of rapid circumnavigation and the prospect fascinated Verne and his readership.

It sparked the imagination that anyone could sit down, draw up a schedule, buy tickets and travel around the world, a feat previously reserved for only the most heroic and hardy of adventurers.

Verne's works began receiving more serious reviews in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with new translations appearing.

The closing date of the novel, 21 December , was the same date as the serial publication. Although a journey by balloon has become one of the images most strongly associated with the story, it does not appear in the book — the idea is proposed in Chapter 32, but dismissed, as it "would have been highly risky and, in any case, impossible.

This plot element is reminiscent of Verne's earlier Five Weeks in a Balloon , which first made him a well-known author.

At the time of publication and until , a de jure International Date Line did not exist. If it did, he would have been made aware of the change in date once he reached this line.

Thus, the day he added to his clock throughout his journey would be removed upon crossing this imaginary line.

However, in the real world, Fogg's mistake would not have occurred because a de facto date line did exist. He would have noticed, when he arrived in San Francisco, that the local date was actually one day earlier than shown in his travel diary.

As a consequence, it is unlikely he would fail to notice that the departure dates of the transcontinental train in San Francisco and of the China steamer in New York were actually one day earlier than his personal travel diary.

He would also somehow have to avoid looking at any newspapers. Additionally, in Who Betrays Elizabeth Bennet? Following publication in , various people attempted to follow Fogg's fictional circumnavigation, often within self-imposed constraints:.

The idea of a trip around the world within a set period had clear external origins and was popular before Verne published his book in Even the title Around the World in Eighty Days is not original.

Several sources [7] have been hypothesized as the origins of the story. Greek traveller Pausanias c. Gemelli Careri provides rich accounts of seventeenth-century civilization outside of Europe.

References to his books can be found in other historical publications like the Calcutta Review. Verne's friend Jacques Arago had written a very popular Voyage autour du monde in In —70 the idea of travelling around the world reached critical popular attention when three geographical breakthroughs occurred: the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in America , the linking of the Indian railways across the sub-continent , and the opening of the Suez Canal In early , the Erie Railway Company published a statement of routes, times, and distances detailing a trip around the globe of 23, miles in seventy-seven days and twenty-one hours.

Title: Around the World in 80 Days When this movie is made in , one could circumnavigate the globe in a little less than two days. When Jules Verne wrote the story "Around the World in Eighty Days" in , he predicted that one day man could accomplish the task in eighty hours, but which most considered folly to do in eighty days in current times, that is except for people like Englishman Phileas Fogg, a regimented man who believed all it would take is exacting work, the skills he possesses.

He just has to make sure a train's schedule meets the required sailing schedule which meets the required coach schedule and so on.

As such, he takes up what ends up being the highly publicized twenty thousand pounds sterling wager from his fellow members at the London Reform Club to do so, losing the bet which would ruin him financially.

Along for the ride is Fogg's new, loyal and devoted valet, the recently arrived Latin immigrant, Passepartout, who possesses unusual skills which could be major assets, but whose all consuming Written by Huggo.

This has got to be one of the most delight comedies ever made. I totally agree with one comment that says "Around the World in 80 Days like a fine wine, it gets better with age".

One of the most fun, wittiest, and delightful films of all time and that's coming from a person who adores film and has seen plenty in his my day.

I do not recall the last time I had so much fun while watching a movie, it's basically just one big fun fest! The cinematography and photography are unarguably some of the best ever in any film.

How anyone could call this film boring is beyond me. It is fun, witty, delightfully written, directed, and as I already mentioned acted. The score is also a work of genius.

See this film, then see it again. If you hate it, well, then you need to lighten up a bit no offense intended.
